Favorite Video Games of 2022

Hey guys, Happy New Year! I'm sorry I've been a bit absent the last few weeks. I honestly can't believe that this is going to be my first post of the new year. I decided to do a bit of a series of favorites posts, and am going to start with my favorite video games.

Not all of these games are particularly new, but they were definitely the ones I played the most, so let's hop into it!

Divinity: Original Sin II [Switch, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PC, Xbox One]

Genre: Role Playing, Adventure, Strategy

I would say this game took 1st place for me. As you all know, I'm obsessed with Dungeons and Dragons. When J found out how much I liked the game, he suggested we play this game together! He said the game is very similar to playing Dungeons and Dragons, and he was right. You choose what kind of adventurer you want to be, your class, and choose your stats. You have missions, and can choose if you want to be good or evil depending on your decisions throughout the game.

We binged this game for about a month and a half. It was so much fun. We already decided we were going to play the game again with difference characters, so I'm looking forward to see how the outcome changes. I highly recommend this game. And it's available on multiple gaming platforms!

Stardew Valley [PC, Switch, Mobile, Playstation Consoles, Xbox Consoles]

Genre: Cozy Gaming, Farm Simulation

This game has been a long time favorite game of mine. I've been playing this game for years. I originally bought this game on Steam, and have about 20-30 hours on there. Then during the pandemic, I bought the game for my Switch! I ended up playing much more on there, and since it isn't my first time playing the game, I'm also much more successful.

It's such a cozy game. While sometimes I feel like there aren't enough hours in a day, most of the time it's nice to be able to play at your own pace. This is another game that is available on all platforms, even mobile!

It's totally different from Divinity 2, but it's another game I highly recommend.

Pokemon Scarlet [Switch]

This is the latest Pokémon game, and I have a lot of thoughts on it. It's open world, and I love it. On the other hand, it's super buggy and feels like it was lazily made. In a world where there are so many really high quality open world games, I feel like this one is leaps and bounds behind all of them.

The Pokémon fandom has so many fans, and it's a little disappointing not see more effort made in making the game the best it could be.

Even with all my complaints, I've loved so many aspects to the game. It's fun roaming around the open map and catching Pokémon. I like how long the game is, and all the objectives they give you.

I do feel like this game is really easy (especially for someone who's been playing Pokémon their whole lives). When you compare it to some of the original Pokémon games, like Pokémon Crystal, Emerald, Red or Yellow, I find that they don't really challenge a player as much as they used to.

Even with all my complaints, I still really enjoyed this game, and if you're a fan of any Pokémon games, this is still a really fun one to play! I do hope they make huge improvements for the next one.

Pokemon Shining Pearl [Switch]

Now I got this game, because one of my best friends, Amanda, was playing Brilliant Diamond for the first time. I had played the original Pokémon Pearl on the DS...or was it the 3DS? Regardless, I owned it.

When I saw her playing it, I really missed playing Pokémon, and decided to get this one. I didn't really notice any differences in terms of the actual gameplay. It was a huge update to the graphics, which was fun to see!

I also don't remember the underground being as cool as it was. I think I enjoyed playing this game even more a second time around! If you haven't played this one yet, it's a fun one in the Pokémon series to play!

Disney Dreamlight Valley [Switch, PC, Playstation Consoles, Xbox Consoles]

This was a surprising favorite for me. My friend Melissa sent me a snap of her playing this game, and the moment she started hyping it up.

I would consider this game to be a cozy game with a plotline. You find yourself in a valley, and you have to bring all the villagers back to the town. You can build, farm, cook, and collect items in order to help the villagers in the town & become friends with them. The villagers are, of course, Disney characters.

I've had a lot of fun playing this game. I do find it a bit glitchy at times, but it's still in Beta, so you can expect it not to be perfect.

I like how much you can customize your character, I feel like the missions are pretty fun, and the town customization is much better than the Animal Crossing one. Definitely a hit for me, and I 100% recommend.

Immortals Fenyx Rising [PC, Switch, Playstation Consoles, Xbox Consoles]

I've been playing this game on and off for maybe about a year and a half. I'm a mood player, so during the pandemic all I wanted to do was play some cozy games. After a while I went back to this game, and I binged it hard. I finished it at the very beginning of 2022.

I find this game to be a Greek Mythology game that slightly resembles Zelda Breathe of the Wild. It has puzzles, a stamina bar, and armor you can collect. There is very little bad I can say about the game. The game has some missions that are really challenging, and some that are very simple. The battles take some strategy, which I liked. I also liked the dialogue between the characters.

I still haven't gotten around to playing the DLC that came out at the beginning of last year, but eventually I'll get around to it. In the meantime, I highly recommend it! This game is also found on most platforms.

There were so many games I wanted to play, but didn't have the chance to! I know for a fact that the new God of War was amazing, so if you're looking for a new story action game, check that one out. I sometimes have a hard time balancing my hobbies, and so switch off between playing a lot and reading a lot. Right now, I'm having a huge reading moment, and haven't been playing much.

Happy 2023, Melina! Hope you had a lovely festive break.

I didn't play nearly as many games last year as I did in the years before, but they were all great games at least. I recently beat Pokémon Violet and have all the same thoughts as you – I did appreciate the post-game stuff though! As for other games I enjoyed in 2022... Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Atelier Ryza 2, Ni No Kuni and Cozy Grove all ranked highly for me.
