Can You Be Too Old for Young Adult Lit?

As you guys can tell, I still read a lot of Young Adult Literature. Yes. I am 22 years old and I still enjoy reading Young Adult Lit. While I am way more picky about how I rate my books, and what I enjoy reading, I still enjoy reading this genre.

I actually took a Young Adult Lit class in college last semester. I honestly loved this course. I got to have amazing discussions about books that are new to the market, while also reading classic Young Adult Lit books. We also had the discussion of what exactly makes a book fit into that genre.

Our professor gave us an article that taught us what made a book fit into that category. Librarians were the ones to create this genre. They categorized books that they thought were appropriate for that age group. Young Adult Literature typically ranges between the ages of 14-19, give or take a few years. You know what age group buys the most Young Adult Lit books? Adults between the ages of 20-34.

Young Adult Literature books are just fiction books. A lot of the protagonists are young, but that doesn't necessarily mean that these books are only meant to be read by young adults. Some of the themes that are interwoven within the books are extremely complex. There are certain books within the genre that I actually feel might be too mature for the audience that is being targeted. Therefore, to answer the question above, there is no such thing as being too old for Young Adult Lit!

If you ever felt bad for reading this genre of literature, I hope this helped you out a bit. Don't ever feel ashamed for reading what interests you! I hope you guys have an amazing day/night!

Well said! I'm 24 and I still read young adult books, though not as much as I used to. I loved Harry Potter and Eragon and I reread them occasionally, plus books like the hunger games and the mortal instruments. I do honestly prefer books in the sci-fy/ fantasy genre because I find the characters are written to be more relatable to me and some young adult books can be so angsty! They have to be well written for me to enjoy them I guess.

That's something that's happened to me too! A book has to be extremely well written for me to thoroughly enjoy it! What are your favorite books?

It's so hard to choose favorites! I love anything from Robin Hobb, almost all of her books link together in someway into one big story. I also really loved Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle, but I'm starting to give up hope on him ever finishing the trilogy! It's been years since his last release. I'm currently reading Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series right now, He writes books so fast it's incredible, and he manages to write them extremely well. The guy is a machine!
